The Santa Barbara Sea Glass & Ocean Arts Festival (formerly known as the Carpinteria Sea Glass Festival) occurs annually on the second weekend in September and is held at the Earl Warren Showgrounds in the renowned coastal jewel of Santa Barbara, California. In an exciting celebration of ocean-inspired art and jewelry, the event will be held September 8-9, 2018 from 10am-5pm at the Earl Warren Showgrounds, 3400 Calle Real, Santa Barbara, CA.
This festival is the only one of its kind in Southern California, and one of three on the west coast alone. Rooted in the community, the festival’s values ring true in the collaboration with local artists, the venue location, a commitment to going green, the dedicated committee of event planners, and through partnerships with non-profit organizations. Whether you’re an artist or a shopper, a collector or an admirer of sea glass, local or just visiting; there’s a little bit of something for everyone.
Since its inception, the Santa Barbara Sea Glass & Ocean Arts Festival has inspired sea glass artists, collectors, and enthusiasts from all over the country to flock to California’s central coast. In August of 2015, local, sea glass loving merchants, artists, and community members from across Santa Barbara County joined together and organized the first-ever Carpinteria Sea Glass Festival, aimed at celebrating both the tiny coastal community and all things sea glass.
With 4,000 guests in its first year, the festival proved to be a rousing success; but as most first experiences go, year one was full of learning experiences, and the festival returned in year two in a different location. Just fifteen minutes up the road, in beautiful Santa Barbara, the perfect location was waiting like a bright blue bottle stopper.
VISIONS FOR 2018
This year, we have selected the Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network as our ‘Giving Back’ nonprofit recipient. A portion of the proceeds from our festival -- including a portion of your ticket -- will go directly to rescuing, rehabilitating, and returning wildlife to their habitats.
In the true spirit of sea glass, we are dedicated to leaving the world more beautiful than how we found it and this shows in our festival’s green practices. This year, our food trucks will be using compostable cutlery and and we will have reusable water bottles and canvas tote bags for sale as plastic alternatives. Our featured artist, Elizabeth Roberts, will also illuminate the effects of single-use plastic pollution while fostering awareness about marine environments and degradation.
This year, various speakers, workshops, and displays will provide learning opportunities for festival goers. Guests have three opportunities on Sunday to attend a wire wrapping workshop and are welcomed to enjoy presentations on Saturday and Sunday from a variety of speakers on topics ranging from best tips for identifying sea glass to issues of marine pollution. Learn more about this year’s workshop and see the festival speaker schedule here.
