The Santa Barbara Sea Glass & Ocean Arts Festival (now a nonprofit corporation) occurs annually on the second weekend in September and is held at the Earl Warren Showgrounds in the renowned coastal jewel of Santa Barbara, California. In an exciting celebration of ocean-inspired art and jewelry, the event will be held Saturday September 14, 2019 10am-5pm & Sunday September 15, 2019 10am-4pm at the Earl Warren Showgrounds, 3400 Calle Real, Santa Barbara, CA.
This festival is the only one of its kind in Southern California, and one of three on the west coast alone. Rooted in the community, the festival’s values ring true in the collaboration with local artists, the venue location, a commitment to going green, the dedicated committee of event planners, and through partnerships with non-profit organizations. Whether you’re an artist or a shopper, a collector or an admirer of sea glass, local or just visiting; there’s a little bit of something for everyone.
Since its inception, the Santa Barbara Sea Glass & Ocean Arts Festival has inspired sea glass artists, collectors, and enthusiasts from all over the country to flock to California’s central coast. In August of 2015, local, sea glass loving merchants, artists, and community members from across Santa Barbara County joined together and organized the first-ever Carpinteria Sea Glass Festival, aimed at celebrating both the tiny coastal community and all things sea glass.
VISIONS FOR 2019
We are excited to announce this year’s “Giving Back” recipient is the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum and the Santa Barbara Sea Glass and Ocean Arts Festival share a love of our coastal community and maritime culture which is part of the Santa Barbara Channel that we call home. The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum provides hands-on learning opportunities that delve into the rich history of the Santa Barbara harbor and the Santa Barbara channel. After a visit to the museum you will walk away with a respect for people who make their living from the ocean, and better understand the marine life that lives in the waters of the Santa Barbara channel. In addition to the museum exhibits you will find historic vessels in the harbor and a theater that provides a venue for films, lectures, and panel discussions on all things maritime.
In the true spirit of sea glass, we are dedicated to leaving the world more beautiful than how we found it and this shows in our festival’s green practices. Our food trucks will be using compostable cutlery and we will have reusable logo water bottles and canvas tote bags for sale as plastic alternatives.
This year, various speakers, workshops and displays will provide learning opportunities for festival goers. Due to the popularity of last year’s wire wrapping workshops we have added two more this year: Sea Themed Bracelet making & Sea themed Cyanotype paper printing which are offered both Saturday and Sunday. Along with that, all festival goers are welcome to enjoy presentations on both days from a variety of speakers on topics ranging from sea glass education to local Maritime history. Learn more and sign up for our workshops or see our schedule of events here.
